Heath Service Consultation

There is currently a review into all health care services in Newark. Newark hospital is not closing. There are several reasons for this review - the population is ageing, health care standards are rising and Newark is a growth area. We must tackle health inequalities and health care should be in the right place and at the right time, first time. This is a long-term strategy. Some changes could happen quite quickly, others may take more time. Click here for links to consultation documents.

Community Magazine Contacts

CAN has recently updated the list of editors of community, parish, faith, village, group / organisation magazines in Newark & Sherwood. One of CAN's aims is to help people to feel more able to influence decisions made in their locality and would welcome the opportunity to work with the people who produce these publications as they are very effective in reaching a wide variety of people. In return we are able to pass on the list to potential advertisers who may wish to support your publication.

At present we are actively looking to make contact with representatives of different faith and ethnic communities and are finding it hard to trace any organised groups. If you can help us or would like to discuss this work, please contact us .

Update on WREN

As of the 28th November 2009, WREN will no longer be accepting applications from projects which only fit the requirements of WREN because they fall in the 10 mile radius of Bilsthorpe Landfill Site.

There is a further change to WREN’s funding criteria. WREN can no longer fund the fabric of new buildings or extensions but can contribute to the internal fixtures and fittings. due to a change in regulation from HM Revenue and Customs.

Plunkett Foundation:  Village Core Programme
The Village Core Programme supports the establishment of community-owned village shops in rural communities or the transfer of existing shops into community ownership.  All applicants applying to the programme must demonstrate the benefits the community-owned shop will provide to rural residents suffering from social or economic exclusion.  Examples of eligible groups include:

·                Elderly people without their own transport
·                Disabled people without access to retailing facilities
·                Young people without employment opportunities
·                Single parents without childcare facilities
·                Members of the community on low incomes

To enable community owned shops to become viable and sustainable community enterprise the programme provides start-up grants of up to £20,000 per community-owned village shop, subject to contributions of at least the same value being obtained from the village and a loan of at least the same value from Cooperative and Community Finance, a recognised Community Development Finance Institution (CDFI).

Applications are welcome from legally established community organisations or groups located in rural communities with not less that 300 residents.  Individuals are not eligible to apply and the programme will not support the expansion of existing community-owned shops.

There is no set deadline for applications, Village Core is a rolling programme.
